Ship Reviews

Review of Marina March 6-24 Santiago to Buenos Aires cruise. This was our first Oceania cruise, but we have taken about 20 cruises mostly with Celebrity and Holland America. We chose this cruise for the itinerary and to try something a little better than Celebrity and Holland. My wife and I are both in our Mid 70’s and we booked a midship Concierge Cabin. We traveled with my sister and brother-in-law. We liked having the Concierge lounge on our deck for the convenience of getting coffee and snacks. We booked Simply More and upgraded to the Prestige drinks package, which turned out to be a great decision. We flew to Santiago 2 days early, which was a good decision as about 50 people on this cruise missed departure because missed flights from the US due of weather issues. Some booked flights to arrive only a day early or day of departure and had to catch the ship 2 days later in Puerto Montt, and some didn’t get their luggage until we arrived in Punta Arenas on day 7. Embarkation Day: We all took a private transport from our Hotel, The Ritz Carlton, to the port in San Antonio. We departed at 10:00am and arrived at the port by 11:30 for our check in time. The check-in process was a breeze, and we were on the ship in about 15 minutes. I didn’t like that we had to give Oceania our passports, but they told us it was for Chilean immigration purposes. We enjoyed lunch in the Terrace Café and our rooms were ready at 1:30pm. The TC was not crowded, but a lot of passengers on this cruise arrived later in the day, our departure was not until 7:00pm. After arriving in our cabin, I received a phone call from dining reservations that we had a 6:30pm reservation at Red Ginger for that night. We had booked all 4 of our Specialty Restaurants prior to boarding. I asked about the reservation and was told that this was an additional reservation. Later that day we got a card from the Special Dinning with additional reservations at Tuscan grill (1), Red Ginger (2) and Polo grill (1), so we ended up with 9 total reservations for the 18-night cruise. No one at the dining reservation desk could tell me why we got the extra reservations without requesting them. I am not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Now for the good: Since this was our first Oceania cruise, I have nothing to compare the current Marina food quality with, but compared to our Celebrity and Holland our first night in Red Ginger was probably the best meal of any previous cruises. The Chilean Seabass was excellent and cooked perfectly. The service was excellent as well. Our second Red Ginger visit was not as good. The Calamari was weird, and my Lobster Pad Thai was so over cooked the lobster was inedible. I asked to have it replaced and it was just as overcooked. Our third visit was much better, I ordered the grilled Scallop Trio and they were cooked perfectly. We found all of our specialty restaurant meals in Tuscan, Polo Grill and Jaques to be outstanding for both food and service, which was good since we found the GDR to be severely lacking, which will be covered later in the section of The Bad. Our room attendant Vijay and assistant Mohammed were easily the best cabin attendants I can remember. Vijay was almost like having a butler. Everything we asked for, which wasn’t much, he performed beyond expectations. In fact, the whole crew are just remarkable and exceeded expectations. The waiters and wine and beverage servers in all the restaurants were just as attentive. I read online the many complaints about getting multiple glasses of wine and beverages served with meals, but it seemed like our wine and water glasses were never empty. All of the bars and lounges had great servers taking orders and delivery drinks. The bartenders in Horizons, our favorite daytime bar, were just fantastic. The Concierge lounge concierge was a huge help and saved us many trips to the guest services to get answers to questions. Our Concierge recommended a couple of land restaurants for a late lunch in Puerto Arenas and Ushuaia that turned out to be excellent. On the first day he was very helpful in getting the complicated Oceania internet set up on my devices. Most of our breakfasts were with room service. All of our breakfasts were delivered on time, as ordered and more importantly served warm to hot. How they can serve hot foods, and the GDR can’t, was just amazing. We found Waves to be a great place for lunch with amazing burgers and hot dogs, this was our go to place for lunch. After our disappointing dinners in the GDR we decided to try the Waves Pizza a couple of times and it was as good as any good land pizza and probably the best of any cruise line we have sailed with. We didn’t expect much entertainment at night in the Marina Lounge after reading reviews, but we were surprised. There was a singer Sonja who was excellent and did 2 shows. The comedian Mike Beville was one of the funniest I can remember on any cruise, and he did 2 completely different shows. The only bad show was a guitarist who had no idea of the demographics of his audience and played contemporary music which had many leaving the theater in the middle of his performance. The new Starlink Wi-Fi overall was excellent, and we had no issues except for the day we were in the Falklands. The Falklands government doesn’t allow cruise ships to use Starlink while anchored there and it was turned off, not sure why, but there was no notice from O that this would happen. Now for the Bad The GDR was something less than ‘Grand” and we were lucky to have been able to dine in the Specialties 9 times. We only dined there for diners and the menus lacked much in choices for entrees. On one typical night the menu was: Salmon Tournedos, 5 Peppercorn beef tournedos, Golden Fried Weiner Schnitzel, chicken Fafa, quinoa couscous and fettuccini pasta. Nothing to get excited about and nothing close the finest cuisine at sea. We had much better MDR food on Holland. The other problem was food was served consistently just warm or cool and way under seasoned, have the chefs never heard about salt and pepper? The steak I ordered one night medium rare was well done and sent back but still came back only medium. The prime rib one night was served barely warm and in desperate need for some salt or other seasonings. It was tough to chew and had little flavor. Now the Ugly: The coffee served onboard was just terrible and the biggest complaint I heard from fellow passengers. The first morning of room service the pot of coffee had a funny taste and I couldn’t drink it. Fortunately, we could walk to the Concierge lounge and access the self-serve expresso machine every morning. I brought a large coffee mug with me and found if I did 2 espresso shots and then an Americano coffee mixed together, I got something I could drink. I heard from a food and beverage manager that Oceania knows about the coffee complaints, and they are looking for new coffee bean vendors. We really loved the Horizons lounge and spent most of our sea days there, but as many others have complained it always had a cigarette smoke smell from the smoke escaping the smoking area. One day when I ran into the GM. She asked if I had any comments about the cruise. I brought up the smoking in Horizons and she told me that at the next drydocking O planned on totally enclosing the room and adding an exhaust system to keep the smoke from traveling into the rest of the lounge. If this is an easy solution, this should have been done years ago. Conclusion: We loved this itinerary, and this cruise was in our top 3 all time. I had read complaints about staffing cutbacks, but I never saw any evidence of this from the waiters, bar tenders and lounge waiters. There were always plenty of crew members taking orders for drinks, pouring plenty of water and wine with our meals. We never had any long lines for any venue and the cruise never felt like it was 100% full. It felt like the small ship that it was. We will definitely sail with Oceania again if we find the right itinerary.

My wife and I (70's) enjoyed our voyage through the Canary Islands, Casablanca and Spain aboard the Marina. The ships seems to have been well maintained and its size makes it easy to get around very quickly. The only inconvenience is that on rainy or cold days reaching the higher decks (14 and 15) requires you to use either the forward or aft elevators to avoid crossing from bow to stern or vice versa through the open decks. Unlike other ships, however, there is no promenade deck. It is not possible to walk completely around the ship on the outside on any deck below 14. Embarkation was easy although the line in Tenerife was about 30 minutes. We simply rolled our luggage and walked from the near-by hotel. Once aboard we found our cabin to be comfortable and there was more than enough room for our clothing. The only drawback was the very small shower (Standard Verandah Cabin). The cabin actually has two showers as it quite possible to shower in the bathtub as well. Wifi worked very well aboard but do not expect to stream movies without upgrading your service. The evening entertainment in the main theater (note: unlike larger ships the main theater is not a multi-level Broadway-style venue) was adequate and began every night at 9:15PM. We were disappointed with some of the cruise line's excursions. They did not always live up to the descriptions. We enjoyed four specialty restaurants which was included in our "package." The only drawback was the lack of availability when the reservation system opened 45 days ahead or our cruise date. I was unable to stay up until midnight (as many suggest) so by the time I went on-line (early in the morning) I was only able to find "share" tables at 6:30PM on the first two nights and the last two nights. Not ideal but ok. We had an extra sea day since one port (Cadiz) was cancelled due to the weather. The entertainment crew struggled to come up with anything other than indoor golf putting contest and a movie that was also available on demand in the cabin, but this is to be expected. We were pleasantly surprised on the last day (debarkation in Lisbon) to find we could order breakfast brought to our cabin as early as 6AM! One of our favorite activities was self laundry. This could easily be listed as an activity. Each deck has one self-service laundry (totally free!) with 3 washers and 3 dryers. So if you are thinking to catch-up on laundry on a sea day be prepared to spend time finding a machine since everyone has exactly the same idea! Overall, for us, Oceania is a great choice. Remember, a cruise is what you make it. If you are determined to have a good time you will. If you are cranky and looking for problems you will find them.
